Sunday
27 January
Educational field trip: Investigations of a highly nonlinear and
fractal landscape.
Would you like to walk to the summit of Mt Kosciuszko, Australia's
highest mountain? Would you like to see one of the most
spectacular alpine wildflower tapestries in the world?
A bus excursion to Thredbo is planned for DynamicSummer participants
on Sunday 27 January. From the top of the chairlift at Thredbo
it is a 12km return walk to the Mt Kosciuszko summit. The grade
is easy and the track is good and fully signposted. There are
many other beautiful walks around Thredbo, activities such as
a bobsled ride, and numerous cafes and restaurants for those who prefer
to remain below the treeline.
See http://www.thredbo.com.au/
for more information about Thredbo
and the surrounding alpine country.
Cost:
Cheap! Tickets for the bus will cost AU$30 per person, payable
on the first day of the Summer School. This is very cheap because
it
includes the $6.50 per person entrance fee to the National Park.
The tickets will be offered on a first-come first-served basis -
so be early!
Other costs: For those who wish to use the chairlift (essential
for a day walk to Mt Kosciuszko) tickets cost AU$21 and are purchased
at the base of the chairlift. The Kosciuszko Express chairlift
is 1.8 kilometres long and climbs 560 vertical meters.
Persons wishing to take part in this excursion should wear
good walking shoes, a sun-hat, and carry food and drink in a
backpack. There is NO drinking water available along the
Mt Kosciuszko track. Also bring some warm and waterproof
clothing - the weather in the mountains can change from warm
to cold very quickly even in January.
For those walking to Mt Kosciuszko, note that the last chairlift
back down the escarpment leaves at 5pm.
There
are numerous places in Thredbo village where food and drink
can be purchased.
The bus trip from Canberra to Thredbo takes 2.5 to 3 hours.
Departure will therefore be at 8am sharp from Ursula College and
Liversidge Court only.
The bus will leave Thredbo for the return trip at 6:30pm sharp.
Note that persons who miss the return bus are fully responsible
for their own accommodation and transport back to Canberra.
No refunds can be offered.
