Australian Learning and Teaching Council Citation
Congratulations to Dr Anna Wilson for receiving an Australian Learning and Teaching Council Citation Award. The citations are for outstanding contributions to student learning and Dr Wilson has been recognised for making physics accessible and relevant to students at all levels of the undergraduate program.
Professor George Dracoulis
2007 Australian Nuclear Association's Annual Award
Congratulations to Professor George Dracoulis on being presented with the Australian Nuclear Association's Annual Award in December 2007. The Award recognises Professor Dracoulis' outstanding contributions to research, research supervision and international research collaboration in nuclear physics, especially in the areas of nuclear spectroscopy and in atomic structure.

Australian Engineering Excellence Award 2007
The Australian National University Australian Engineering Excellence Award 2007

Australian Engineering Excellence Award 2007 has been awarded to the Superconducting LINAC-booster for National Heavy Ion Accelerator Facility Team of the Department of Nuclear Physics. It was presented at a special ceremony in Parliament House on 22nd of November 2007.

The LINAC Team includes: Dr David Weisser, Dr Nikolai Lobanov, Dr Tibor Kibédi, Dr Paul Davidson, Dr Gordon Foote, Mr Alistair Muirhead, Mr Robert Turkentine, Mr Justin Heighway, Mr Howard Wallace, Mr Alan Cooper, Mr John Bockwinkel, Mr David Anderson and Mr Dennis Gibson.

Many other academic and technical staff of the Department of Nuclear Physics and technical personnel from Electronics Unit and Mechanical Workshop of Research School of Physical Sciences and Engineering have made a valuable contribution along the way.

Professor Aidan Byrne
ANU Vice-Chancellor's Career Achievement Award
Congratulations to Professor Aidan Byrne on being awarded on of the Vice-Chancellor's Awards for Career Achievement. The Vice-Chancellor presented Professor Byrne with the award at a special Staff Awards Ceremony held at University House on the 8 November 2007.

The Career achievement award recognises outstanding work performance and professional career development of University staff. The Award acknowledges the value the University places on the skill, knowledge, expertise and work performance of academic and general staff, as well as their future career potential and commitment to the University.

The Australian National University 40-Year Service Medallion
The Vice-Chancellor presented Mr Alan Harding and Mr John Kennedy with the 40-year Service Medallion at the Staff Awards Ceremony held at University House on the 8 November 2007.

The 40-year Service Medallion acknowledges the commitment and achievement of staff members who have worked at ANU for at least 40 years.

ACT Government New Technology and Innovation Award
ACT Government New Technology and Innovation Award has been awarded to the Superconducting LINAC-booster for National Heavy Ion Accelerator Facility Team of the Department of Nuclear Physics for invention of innovative accelerating structures, perfection of the resonators rf control systems, rigorous engineering of the cryogenic system and development of effective superconducting coating technologies. This award was presented at a special ceremony on 20th September 2007.

Dr Anna Wilson
ANU Vice Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Teaching
Dr Anna Wilson has been awarded one of the Vice-Chancellor's Awards for Excellence in Teaching for 2006. The award follows nomination by undergraduate students and is intended to recognize and encourage excellence in undergraduate teaching at the Australian National University.

The Inaugural Annual College of Science Teaching Prize
Congratulations go to the team from Physics Dr Anna Wilson, Dr Kate Wilson and Mr Andrew Papworth for winning (joint with BoZo) the Inaugural Annual College of Science Teaching Team Prize. This prize is in recognition for their outstanding work in revitalising undergraduate learning in Laboratory-based Physics.

Anna Wilson holds a joint appointment with the Department of Nuclear Physics.

PAWSEY MEDAL 2006
Dr Mahananda Dasgupta has been awarded the Pawsey Medal for 2006

The Pawsey Medal recognises the contributions to science in Australia by the late Dr J.L. Pawsey, FAA. Its purpose is to recognise outstanding research in physics by scientists under 40 years at the closing date, except in the case of significant interruptions to a research career. The award is made annually and is restricted to candidates who are normally resident in Australia and for research conducted mainly in Australia.

Vice-Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Innovation and Service Quality 2005
The Vice-Chancellors Award for Excellence in Innovation and Service Quality for 2005 has been awarded to the National Heavy Ion Accelerator Facility Team of the Department of Nuclear Physics. This award was presented at a special ceremony on 3 November 2005.

The Department of Nuclear Physics National Heavy Ion Facility Team includes: Dr David Weisser, Dr Nikolai Lobanov, Dr Gordon Foote, Dr Tibor Kibedi, Dr Paul Davidson, Mr John Bockwinkel, Mr Alan Cooper, Mr Alan Harding, Mr Justin Heighway, Mr John Kennedy, Mr Lorenzo Lariosa, Mr Alistair Muirhead, Mr Robert Turkentine, Mr Howard Wallace and Mrs Marjorie O'Neill.

Professor George Dracoulis

2004 Walter Boas Medal

Prof. George Dracoulis of the Australian National University has been awarded the 2004 BOAS Medal for his outstanding contributions to the understanding of nuclear structure. His work in this area has ensured that the Nuclear Physics Department at the Australian National University is amongst the foremost nuclear structure laboratories in the world.

The award was established to promote excellence in Physics in Australia and to perpetuate the name of Walter Boas.

Dr Nanda Dasgupta

Women in Physics Lecturer 2004
Dr Nanda Dasgupta has been selected as the Women in Physics Lecturer for 2004.

The Committee was very impressed with Nanda's excellent achievements as a physicist as well as her commitment and interest to service and outreach activities.

Professor George Dracoulis

2003 Lyle Medal

The Lyle Medal recognises the contribution of Sir Thomas Ranken Lyle, FRS, to Australian science and industry generally and in particular to his own fields of physics and mathematics. The purpose of the medal is to recognise outstanding achievement by a scientist in Australia for research in mathematics or physics.

The 2003 medal was presented to Professor George Dracoulis FAA for research on the structure of atomic nuclei. Professor Dracoulis is Head of the Department of Nuclear Physics at the ANU.

The citation read:

George Dracoulis has made outstanding contributions to our understanding of the structure of atomic nuclei. His research has been characterised by the development of techniques for the selective formation of nuclei and the determination of their properties. This work has ensured that the nuclear laboratory at the Australian National University has a place among the foremost nuclear structure laboratories in the world.

Professor Dracoulis was presented with the Lyle Medal during the Australian Academy of Science Annual General Meeting and 50th Anniversary celebrations from 5-7 May, 2004.

Australian Federal Government
Centenary Medals
Professors John Newton and George Dracoulis were both awarded Centenary Medals, struck to mark the centenary of Federation and "the achievements of a broad cross-section of the Australian community at the commencement of the new century".
