The study of optical vortices is a traditional research activity of our
team. This year, several important projects have been completed, such
as the prediction and analysis of parametric vortex solitons in a
medium with quadratic and cubic nonlinearities (such vortices have been
recently demonstrated experimentally by the group of Prof. P. Di
Trapani from Italy) featured in Optics and Photonics News. Together
with our colleagues from the Laser Physics Centre, we have predicted and
demonstrated experimentally a new effect in the physics of vortices: the
so-called nonlinear Aharonov-Bohm scattering [
Opt. Lett. 25, 123 (2000),
Phys. Rev. Lett. 87, 043901 (2001) ]. This result was also
chosen for the special issue "Optics in 2000" that presents summaries
of the most important recent research in optics. A cover story on the
physics of optical vortices (written by Yuri Kivshar and
Elena Ostrovskaya) has been published in the April' 2001 issue of
the Optics and Photonics News [
Opt. Photon. News 12, 24 (2001) ].
