The Twelfth Gaseous Electronics Meeting

The Second International Workshop on Plasma Processing

Murruramarang Resort, Batemans Bay, NSW, Australia

February 3-6, 2002

General Information

The first GEM was held in Sydney in 1980 to provide a forum for basic processes in gaseous electronics including, plasma, collisional processes, laser interactions, theory and modelling. Every subsequent two years about 60 researchers and students have participated at various venues around Australia, each and every meeting leaving an indelible mark of friendship and collegiate conviviality on all participants.

The 12th GEM should be held in Canberra but, what the hell, we decided that a luxury resort on the south coast (Murruramarang Resort) would fit the bill very well. We have decided to greatly broaden the scope of the conference to cater for researchers and engineers in photonics, micromachining and bio-technology.

The First International Workshop on Plasma Processing was held in conjunction with the GEM 6 in Melbourne and Sorrento and was a great success with invited speakers from the USA, France and Germany. For the upcoming Second Workshop we hope to attract speakers from the PacRim countries and the southern hemisphere as well. The subject area is that of the GEM and would include micromachining, bio-technology, diagnostic systems, photonics both silica and polymer based.

GEM 12 is dedicated to the memory of Ray Grimm, Peter Christiansen, Tom Kaiser and Harry Massey, Australian physicists who believed in freedom, democracy and the pursuit of basic understanding.

Contributions are called for in all areas involving gaseous electronics, including:

The full registration fee will be $A120. The is NO registration fee for students and retirees. The Meeting will be held at Murramarang resort where we have negotiated a special accommodation and meals package for $A400 which includes: garden bungalow-style accommodation with luxury single en-suite rooms, welcome party Sunday evening, breakfast, lunch and dinner for Monday and Tuesday and breakfast on Wednesday. More details can be found at the accommodation package link.

Talks and posters will be in the morning from 08.30 to 12.30 and in the afternoon starting at 17.00 to 19.00 leaving a good time for discussion during lunch, the early afternoon and in the evening. We may have a short poster session on Monday evening depending on the number of attendees and abstracts. The conference banquet will be on the Tuesday evening. There will be a number of invited talks (~30 mins.) as well as a number of contributed papers (~ 15 mins.). We hope to accommodate as many student talks as possible in the contributed papers and will be offering a prize ($250) for the best student presentation.

The resort is 20 km north of Batemans Bay and is about a 2 hour drive from Canberra and a 3 1/2 hour drive from Sydney. It is possible to fly into Moruya (1/2 hour drive to Murramarang) from Sydney on Hazelton Airlines. Assistance with Travel will be provided where possible.
